The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) is a peace-promoting organization pushing for the unilateral nuclear disarmament of the UK. In a wider context, it also campaigns for the international nuclear disarmament of the main ‘nuclear’ powers; the US, UK, France, Russia & China. Since CND’s inception as a peace movement, this ‘club’ of nuclear-armed states now includes India, Pakistan, North Korea & (unofficially) Israel. Thus CND also campaigns for higher arms regulation through agreements such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It also campaigns against the building of nuclear power stations in the UK. CND’s iconic logo is an epigrammatic depiction of a bomber-aircraft pointing downwards & is synonymous with all positive & progressive social movements.
CND was formed in 1957, against the backdrop of an escalating arms- race between the US & the Soviet Union. Its famous slogan ‘Ban the Bomb’ became the rallying cry for public outrage at the vulnerability of the UK in the face of the Cold War between East & West. It has remained in the forefront of the UK peace-movement ever since. It recently described itself as being Europe’s biggest single-issue peace campaign.
